Mending a split seam on a much-loved toy
How to repair a burst seam on a soft toy invisibly: finding sound fabric, re-stuffing, and closing it so the same seam does not fail again.
Pinned up on
A favourite toy always splits in the same places: under the arms, at the neck and where a leg joins the body. Those are the points that take the pull when it is carried by one limb. A good repair closes the hole and also makes that spot stronger than it was.
Step 1: Look at why it failed
You need
- good light
Is it the thread that broke, with the fabric intact? Then a simple re-stitch will do. Has the fabric frayed away from the stitches? Then you need to stitch further in, onto sound fabric. Has the fabric itself torn? Then it needs a small patch from inside.
Step 2: Tidy the opening
You need
- small scissors
- seam ripper
Snip away loose broken threads, and unpick one or two stitches more at each end until you reach stitching that is firm. Starting a repair on weak stitches just moves the hole along. A dab of fray stopper on badly frayed edges helps, once it is dry.
Step 3: Top up the stuffing
You need
- fibrefill
- hemostat or chopstick
An old toy has usually lost some stuffing at the split, and the rest has gone flat. Tease a few small tufts of new fibrefill in through the hole, especially at the joint. Don’t overdo it, or the seam will be under strain again.
Step 4: Close with a deeper ladder stitch
You need
- doubled thread
- curved needle for awkward spots
Fold the edges in along the original seam line, or a few millimetres further in if the fabric was frayed. Close with ladder stitch, starting and ending 1 cm into the sound seam on each side. Make the rungs short, about 3 mm. A curved needle makes the job much easier under arms and round the neck.
Step 5: Reinforce and finish
You need
- the same thread
Go back over the repair a second time with the same ladder stitch, offset by half a rung. Fasten off by burying the knot in the stuffing well away from the seam. A child will test it within a day, and a doubled seam will hold.
If the fur is worn thin around the repair, keep the toy out of the washing machine from now on. A gentle hand wash and air drying will make it last longer.
